Leading contender for an IFAW Animal Action Award 2007

BEA Brinkler used to dance with the stars on the West End stage but now she’s devoted her life to caring for animals.

For the past 22 years, Bea has been rescuing seal pups, otters and deer.

She’s called out at night to save help animals trapped on a beach or hit by a car. Then she’ll be up again at dawn to feed and nurse a patient.

Bea’s amazing work has made her a leading contender for an IFAW Animal Action Award 2007 in conjunction with The People.

She said: “It is a very different life from the fun I had as a dancer.

“But today I’m releasing five seal pups we found stranded on the beach back into the wild. It’s so satisfying and I love every minute.”

Bea, 63, worked as a singer and dancer alongside Leslie Crowther, Danny La Rue and Ruth Madoc in the 60s and 70s, until re-training as a nurse.

After meeting husband Michael, 74, she moved to Ullapool in the Scottish Highlands where she first started looking after animals and birds after finding three guillemots covered in oil Bea added: “From then on tourists and the police station next door began bringing animals to me. It just grew and grew.”

She launched the Highland Wildlife Hospital Trust in 1985 and now cares for dozens of injured animals. The hospital was donated by a friend and includes a large pool and aviary

“I’m thrilled to have been nominated for the award – but just saving the seals and other wildlife is what keeps me going.”

Robbie Marsland, UK Director of IFAW(International Fund for Animal Welfare), said: “Bea is a real wildlife star and her devotion to animals is an example to us all.”
